Golden Eagles Work Overtime To Beat Westmont

Box Score

SANTA BARBARA -- Cal State L.A.'s women's soccer team had to work overtime Tuesday in order to pick up its first victory of the season.

The Golden Eagles got a goal from Khadijah Greenwood just 47 seconds into overtime to beat Westmont, 1-0, Tuesday in Santa Barbara. Cal State L.A. (1-1-1) has only allowed one goal in three non-conference matches.

The Golden Eagles had lost to Cal State San Marcos, 1-0 before battling to a 0-0 tie with Texas A&M Commerce last week at UC San Diego. The Golden Eagles had to play all three matches on the road because the new grass field at Jesse Owens Track was not ready for play.

Heather Emswiler made four saves to record her second shutout of the season. All four of her saves came in the second half against Westmont, which is ranked No. 11 in the country in the NAIA.

Cal State L.A. managed only one shot in the first half and Westmont enjoyed an 11-5 advantage in shots. The Golden Eagles were whistled for five fouls to only two for the Warriors. Westmont also had four corner kicks to one for the Golden Eagles.

In the extra period, though, Cal State L.A. struck quickly to win. Greenwood got the ball on the left side of the field, dribbled past a defender and found herself one-on-one with Westmont goalie Natalie Johnston. Greenwood uncorked a shot from about 12 yards out into the upper right corner of the net to give the Golden Eagles the win.

Johnston made three saves for the Warriors.

Sarah Califf, Jasmine Wallace and Perla Ramirez had shots on goal for the Golden Eagles prior to Greenwood's game-winning attempt.

Cal State L.A. will now begin California Collegiate Athletic Association action on Friday with a match at Cal State San Bernardino.
